Poultices and compresses are two ways to use herbs externally to treat internal and external health concerns. Both methods can be used for burns, abscesses, skin infections, boils, infections, muscle aches and sore joints.
Herbal Compresses
A compress is a clean cloth that is soaked in an herbal decoction, tincture or tea. The cloth is then placed on the affected area. Compresses can be used either hot or cold. Many people alternate using hot and cold treatments in order to get the maximum benefits from a compress. Visit our Decoctions and Tinctures Page or How to Make Tea for instruction on how to make them.

Herbal Poultices
A poultice combination of moist material (usually made of herbs, pastes, and other fillers). The herbs and fillers are combined to make a paste. The paste is smeared onto a thin clean cloth or gauze then applied to a sore or inflamed part of the body in order to provide relief. Poultices can also be used for eruptions, boils, carbuncles, abscesses, and infected wounds.
